About Neville

Introduce yourself. Who are you, and what do you do for Control Talent?

My name is Neville, I am a Chemical/Process Engineer from South Africa. I was recruited by CTN to work for one of their clients in the water treatment industry.

Why did you become a mechanical engineer?

From a young age, I knew I wanted to study engineering because I enjoyed finding out how and why things functioned the way they did. That, combined with the fact that I enjoyed chemistry, chemical engineering just combined the two.

Favorite dish in the Netherlands?

My favorite dish has got to be Kibbling.

Strangest characteristic of the Dutch?

Their love for the color orange and a boterham/broodje. Anything and everything can and will somehow fit on a bike.

What was the first Dutch word you remembered well?

Sinaasappel.

Biggest lesson learned so far?

We are not made of sugar so no matter the weather any time is a good time.

The Netherlands

Have you been to the Netherlands before making the move?

No, in fact I had never left the African continent before the move. This was a big step into the unknown.

So why did you actually choose to work abroad?

My parents were expats within Africa throughout my youth and I loved the experience, so it was something that I want to try for myself.

How did you obtain information about working abroad?

I obtained information via online platforms and Control Talent for Dutch specific information. At the time, I also had a friend who was living in the Netherlands who provided additional support.

What have been the biggest challenges so far in integrating into the Netherlands?

For me it is missing your friends and family.

What are the pros of working in the Netherlands?

One of the most notable differences is work-life balance.

If you look back now at where you are, would you still choose to work abroad?

Most definitely yes!

What would be your advice for others considering the same move?

It is incredibly daunting, though after some time you will look back and laugh at yourself for it, or at least I did.

Control Talent

How did the application process through Control Talent go for you?
The application process was very smooth. I was told exactly what documentation was required from my side and all my questions were addressed by Control Talent.

What were the main reasons for coming from South Africa to the Netherlands for work in engineering?

Experience in an international setting.

Can you share some cultural differences you have experienced in the Dutch work environment compared to South Africa?

A major difference is the directness in both a social and work environment although curiosity is always welcomed.

What have been the biggest challenges so far in integrating into the Dutch technical field?

Keeping information to the point has been challenging for me.

Are there specific skills or knowledge you had to develop to be successful in your technical role here?

I had a good background in South Africa though since changing industry, I have had to brush up on specific international standards and the use of various engineering drawing packages.

How did you connect with other Dutch colleagues or professionals in your field?

Lookout for common interests, be open minded and certainly ask lots questions.

Are there certain aspects of working in the Netherlands that have positively surprised you compared to South Africa?

Their respect for your time.

How did you experience Control Talent’s support?

Control Talent along with the other Control Talent engineers supported and advised me through the processes here. There is something really special about the community that Control Talent is fostering.

How would you rate the support from Control Talent during the transition period, and are there improvements you would suggest?

Control Talent was really helpful during the transition phase, they were available to answer any questions and help where they could for both my family and I.
